An Ancient Evil Returns

Post #4: A Death, A Temple and a Giant Lair

Having triggered the Magician’s Magic Mouth alarm, the party battled the creatures exiting the Lab. They fought several flesh golems and two small, disturbing girl-rat hybrids. (They later discovered that the bite of these creatures drained the victim’s strength.)
In the course of the battle, Nagano was struck instantly dead by the blow of a golem.
As they slew these monsters, they heard several booms which shook the floor. The far wall of the room began to crumble. Assuming that the giant-golem they had read about in the magician’s notes was breaking free, they retreated from the lab, and found refuge in the keep above.
The party decided to return through The Cat’s Cradle and bring Nagano’s body to a Temple of Rao, where they hoped he could be revived.
That night, as the party slept, Grim slipped away from the party and has not been seen since.
The party passed through Cat’s Cradle without incident and struck out for the Temple of Rao. Along the way they met a barbarian, aptly named Conan, and a very strange magician who seemed to change personalities frequently. With these two new party members they reached the Temple of Rao.
What they found was completely unexpected. The entire Temple complex (main house, guest quarters, Cemetary and Temple) was completely abandoned. Upon close examination of the temple altar, they found that it could be moved. Underneath they found the corpses of many slain clerics of Rao, throats slit. They found no evidence of how this heinous act was done.
The Druid Ty then volunteered to proceed alone with Nagano’s body to the City of the Temple of the Con’tiad. She felt she would make better time alone. They part returned through the Cat’s Cradle in belated pursuit of the prisoners of the Giants and Drow woman Ayla.
Travelling south past the Keep, the party reached a Hill Giant stronghold. After watching the steading for several hours, they decided to approach at night. (Strangely, just after midnight, the new magician in the party seemed to completely change personality—and his name.)
The party was able to enter the Steading of the Giants undetected, and quickly slew two guards inside the main entrance.
They then proceeded stealthily through the complex as the session concluded…

An unlikely party of adventurers have joined together to solve the mystery of a sinister looking box captured when Jaryn was slain.

A thief named Fell, later discovered to be a Drow named Grim, acquired the box from those who slew Jaryn. He fled the city in the company of a Ranger named Durn Fifthwatch. They barely escaped after being inadvertently helped by the town guard. They were followed by a Paladin who also knew of the box, named Thadius. He was accompanied by a Zephyrmancer named Khermat, and a Samurai named Nagano. Immediately outside the city they befriended a Druid named Tye. Acting on information from Thadius’ guild, the party proceeded north to try and decypher the box.

Kobold on dire weasel
On the road the party was ambushed by a group of kobolds. They defeated and pursued them, and found they had made a camp at a tomb in the wilderness led by giants. Here they were joined by a cleric named Karvos.
Undead drow
They found this to be The Tomb of Ahden Quaylen, an ancient Drow slain in ‘The Battle of the Sunlight’ in ‘478 ASQ.’

Soon after, the Druid Tye learned that local farmer’s cattle were being replaced with others which had been infected with some sickness. On the way they encountered a lair of trolls and slew them. Nagano became separated from the party.

They found their way to a local farmer and attempted to ambush those who were infecting cattle. The ambush failed, and they had to engage the party in the wilderness the following day.
In the battle, they decisively defeated the giants herding the cattle, but a female Drow (who they would later find was named Ayla) escaped through magic.

Immediately after the disappearence of the drow, the sinister looking box mysteriously disintegrated.

They followed a trail northward and reunited with Nagano, who had learned that a nearby village had been raided—and its inhabitants captured. The party followed the kidnappers to a mountain pass known as The Cat’s Cradle. The pass, stocked with monsters and heavily trapped, was designed to keep people out of the hidden valley beyond—which did not appear on any maps. The party made their way through Cat’s Cradle, although it seemed impossible that the giants and their captives could have found their way through it.

On the far side of Cat’s Cradle they found a ‘V’ shaped valley between two mountain ranges where the mountains joined to the south. They were able to pick up tracks heading southward which they believed were the captives from the village.

They soon found a stream of smoke which led them to a keep in the foothills of the mountains.

The party’s adventures are continued in the post called The Keep.

Post #3: The Keep - Golem Lab

They party discovered a note in a backpack in the ettin’s lair. They then discovered a trap door at the bottom of one of the towers of The Keep. They found a compound where some mad magician was creating flesh golems.
Golem on table
They discovered a large room with two sets of tables. One containing human bodies, and the other the bodies of animals and human torsos. Under one table were found four ceramic jars.

Outside one room was a piece of paper with “Fare the well, little Brother” nailed to the wall. In the room was a flesh golem with four arms that attacked and shouted from a magic mouth, “We are assailed!”

The Party then found a kennel of sorts. In some of the eight cages there were:
• large dog/leucrotta mix
• 3 two headed dogs
• upright dog/gnoll hybrid

The party discovered that the jars from the large table room can make the canine golems obey different commands.
Gnoll necromancer
The Party found the office and living quarters of the mage. They found various drawings of a variety of different human-animal hybrid golems. They found various notes written by the golem creator.

The party found treasure xxx behind the bed in the living quarters. They also found a magical tome.

The party advanced to an area called The Lab and could not name the password. A Magic Mouth started yelling “We are assailed!”

The Party’s Adventures will continue in Post #4

The Party followed a trail southward, and saw smoke rising in the foothills of the mountains to the east.
They discovered an ancient keep which was inhabited by leucrotta and ettins.
After clearing the keep, they barricaded the main gate and camped for the night.
During the night hippogriff flew into the courtyard, followed closely by griffon that were hunting them. The group fought off the griffins and saved two of the hippogriff, which flew away.

The party’s adventures are continued in the post called The Keep – Golem Lab.
